Wayne Swann, CEO of NutriGrown, LLC has 14 years R&D experience and 20 years of university technology transfer experience. He began his career at W.R. Grace & Company’s Corporate Research Center in 1972 as a research associate specializing in immobilization of enzymes and microorganisms. In 1981, Mr. Swann joined Genex Corporation as a research scientist, and later manager of Biocatalysis R&D, marketing manager and manager of business planning and development. As a result of his efforts as a researcher/inventor he was awarded 10 U.S. patents and is an author on a number of publications. Several of his inventions were developed into commercial products, including immobilized whole cells for production of L-aspartic acid and L-phenylalanine, the two main components in the production of aspartame (NutraSweet ®). He was the founding director of the Technology Transfer Offices at the Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Laboratory and the University of Maryland College Park.

He has overseen the management of more than 1,600 inventions; 500 license agreements; 30 start-up companies; and $40 million in income. He has been a consultant to the AAAS and the Smithsonian Institution; currently serves on the Board of Directors for a number of companies and non-profit organizations in the US; and is a part-time instructor at the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering.

Mr. Edwards has over 20 years of retail and sales experience including account management, training, and supervision. He has acquired hands-on experience in all aspects of business operations in everything from small business services to high volume retail environments. His innovative approach to marketing and customer relations has brought increased sales, new revenue streams, and dramatically improved productivity for the companies he served.


Tyler Brown, VP Finance, Treasurer, and Secretary

Mr. Brown, a Rouse Scholar participant at HCC and a graduate of American University, has outstanding leadership skills and has studied business, entrepreneurship, and innovation. He has won Awards of Excellence in both Business Management and Entrepreneurship from Howard Community College and received a Business Management Academy Certificate as well as other outstanding achievement awards. A founding member of the Junior Statesmen of America (2007), Mr. Brown is a regular volunteer at the National Institutes of Health.


Katelyn Skarbek, VP Marketing & Sales

Ms. Skarbek, a Rouse Scholar participant and scholarship awardee at HCC and a graduate of the University of Baltimore, has excellent leadership, communication, and marketing skills. With relevant coursework in business, entrepreneurship, and innovation assessment, she was an invited speaker at the 2008 Transatlantic Technology and Training Alliance International Conference and also at the Technology Assessment Partnership Program at Howard Community College in 2008. She has served as marketing and publications consultant, a marketing intern for the Technology Transfer Institute at HCC.


Dr. James Entry, Director of Research and Development (SAB)

Dr. Entry is a USDA co-inventor of Matrix technology and has published important research involving the matrix technology for slow nutrient release, poultry and dairy water as fertilizer sources, quantified Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp, soil microbial biomass in animal waste amended soils and in PAM-amended soils, and developed techniques to measure PAM degradation in the field. His expertise includes soil and water microbiology, soil fertility, and water chemistry, cellulose and lignin degradation, and plant physiology.  Dr. Entry has B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Forest Science with specialization in soil microbiology. He is the author or co-author of 130 refereed scientific journal papers, book chapters, and conference proceedings papers.  Dr. Entry has directed, or personally carried out research in forest, range and agricultural environments.
